For a while I had been thinking to introduce unit blocks to Chanel. Since I read Teaching Numeracy, Language, and Literacy with Blocks I learned the importance of block play and I changed my approach towards them.
Montessori supports the use of blocks in play as children can build, develop creativity, social skills, and even develop physically. The possibilities of play are endless. I presented the names of the blocks and other wood puzzles. As Chanel lifts, makes a symmetrical shape or balances them she is also learning maths, language, and science at the same time.
I am loving these Standard Unit Blocks and Architectural Unit Blocks
sets. I see Chanel, observing, matching, challenged. Constructing them and stacking them has helped her to learn naturally. As all toddlers she needs to be actively involved, and blocks allow her to feel in control of them and explore possibilities.
When your children play with blocks you can teach them classification and sorting, problem solving, as well the concentration to stay within a task. He can also learn to share. You can use sense, feelings, maths, and action words while playing with blocks.
' It feels smooth and heavy. It is round. You can lift it high in the air. This is a circle shape.'
Clean up time is also important and a great time for teaching and learning.
I love to know which of these block units you love?
